Modesto has a large share of food processing, cold storage, and warehouse space, along with the restaurants and retail on McHenry Avenue and downtown. Those buildings carry more extinguishers per address than a typical office, and the Modesto Fire Department inspects them on a regular cycle. Most of our work is keeping that equipment tagged and current so nothing is out of date when the inspector arrives.
Fire Extinguisher Service in Modesto
Annual Inspection and Tagging
California Title 19 requires every portable extinguisher in a commercial building to be serviced once a year. We check the gauge, the hose and nozzle, the pull pin and tamper seal, the mounting bracket, and the weight of the unit, then attach a new dated service tag. Units that fail are recharged, repaired, or replaced, and we tell you which before doing the work.
Six-Year Maintenance and Recharge
Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers have to be emptied, examined internally, and refilled every six years. The same teardown applies any time a unit has been discharged, even partly. A short burst leaves powder in the valve seat and the unit slowly loses pressure afterward, so an extinguisher that was used for two seconds still needs a recharge.
Hydrostatic Testing
Cylinders are pressure tested on a fixed schedule: every twelve years for most dry chemical extinguishers and every five years for CO2 and wet chemical units. The last test date is stamped or labeled on the cylinder. When an older unit costs more to test than to replace, we will say so.
New Extinguishers and Installation
We sell ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers in the common 5, 10, and 20 pound sizes, Class K units for commercial kitchens, and CO2 units for electrical and server rooms. We mount them with the correct bracket or cabinet at the height and travel distance the fire code calls for, and add signage where a unit cannot be seen from the aisle.
Other Fire Protection Work
Kitchen hood systems. Wet chemical suppression systems over cooking equipment are due for service every six months. We replace the fusible links, check nozzles and caps, test the pull station and the gas shutoff, and tag the system. More detail is on the kitchen hood and Ansul systems page.
Exit and emergency lighting. Exit signs and emergency lights have to stay lit for 90 minutes on battery. We run the test, replace failed batteries and fixtures, and provide the annual record.
Fire sprinklers. We perform NFPA 25 inspections at the quarterly, annual, and five-year intervals and handle head replacement, gauges, and small repairs.
Warehouses and Food Plants
Warehouses and processing plants have a few recurring problems. Extinguishers get blocked by pallets or hidden behind racking. Units mounted near wash-down areas corrode at the bottom of the shell. Forklift-mounted extinguishers shake loose in their brackets and lose pressure faster than wall units. On larger sites we work from a numbered list of every unit and its location, so a missing or moved extinguisher shows up on our visit and not during a fire inspection.
Service Area
We serve Modesto and the surrounding Stanislaus County towns: Ceres, Salida, Riverbank, Oakdale, Empire, Hughson, and Patterson. We also take calls from Ripon and Escalon in southern San Joaquin County.
