Fire Extinguishers
State regulations in Title 19 call for annual service on every portable extinguisher in a business, with a dated tag as proof. We inspect each unit, recharge the ones that are low or have been used, and perform six-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing on the required schedule. We also sell and install new fire extinguishers: ABC dry chemical for general use, Class K for kitchens, and CO2 for electrical rooms.
Kitchen Suppression Systems
Hood suppression systems are inspected every six months. The visit covers the fusible links, nozzles, the agent cylinder, the pull station, and the gas or electric shutoff. We tag the system when it passes and give you a written list of anything that has to be corrected when it does not.
Sprinkler Inspections and Backflow Testing
We inspect commercial fire sprinkler systems to NFPA 25 at the quarterly, annual, and five-year intervals. Backflow assemblies on fire lines are tested once a year, and we send the test report to the City of Merced water division.
Exit Signs and Emergency Lights
Exit signs and emergency lights run on a small backup battery that lasts a few years. The code requires a 30-second test each month and a 90-minute test each year. We do the annual test, replace batteries, lamps, and failed fixtures, and leave a written record. In older downtown buildings we often find fixtures that were painted over or disconnected during a remodel.
Employee Training
We teach employees how to use an extinguisher: which fires are small enough to fight, where to stand, and how to pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep. Sessions are held at your workplace. See fire safety training.
What Fire Inspectors Write Up Most
These are the items we see most often on correction notices in Merced:
- Extinguisher tag more than twelve months old
- Extinguisher blocked by stock or furniture, or sitting on the floor with no bracket
- No Class K extinguisher in a kitchen with fryers
- Hood system tag more than six months old
- Emergency light that goes dark when the test button is pressed
- Storage stacked within 18 inches of sprinkler heads
All but the last are things we correct, usually in one visit.
Property Managers
Property managers tend to have many small buildings and few large ones. We can service all of a manager’s Merced properties in one trip and write a separate report for each address, so each building has its own record.
Service Area
We serve Merced and the nearby communities of Atwater, Winton, Livingston, Planada, and Le Grand, including the business parks at the former Castle Air Force Base.
